LEARN YOUR TRADE

If you’re anything like us, you don’t have the foggiest idea what you’re doing and where to start. Here are some helpful hints for beginners when drawing.

STEP 1 - Start with a soft pencil rather than a hard one – they’re more forgiving.

STEP 2 - Pose your sweetie somewhere comfortable and order them to keep still! Clothing optional.

STEP 3 - Start by sketching the outline of your partner’s entire form. A good way to help get the proportions right is to try and look at the shape in another way. Draw the “negative space” – or the space AROUND your partner rather than your partner to help form the outline. If you draw all the negative space shapes surrounding them, you’ll find you have a pretty good rough outline.

STEP 4 - Keep it abstract and sketchy – pay attention to the light and the shade. Shade in darker areas with your pencil, keep the highlights light. Remember your eraser if you make mistakes.

STEP 5 - Don’t attempt facial features or hands if you’re not confident – focus instead on a rough sketch. It can still look good!

STEP 6 - See here for Denis & Emma’s Arty Date Night, or here for a great “How to Draw” tutorial.

VARIATIONS: Photograph each other, or create painted canvas art to put up on your walls (keep it abstract!)
