A Double Date Night at Hanoi Hannah

We have been meaning to eat at Hanoi Hannah for ages, but the waits are always long and to be honest, we just haven’t gotten around to it. But when our awesome friends Cheryl and Tim suggested it for a double lunch date one day, I was on board immediately!

Now, as a quick side note Cheryl is an amazing Melbourne author, blogger and street photographer who is responsible for the awesomeness that is BusinessChic and The Little Black Dress Project – her site is full of business and workwear fashion inspiration and tips.

Cheryl was featuring us for her blog, so we did a quick, windswept photoshoot in a laneway nearby and then hightailed it to the restaurant to stuff our faces.

The Saturday lunch shift meant we only had to wait about 15 minutes to grab our table, and right after we sat down it got quiet. So if you can get away with a late weekend lunch, I reckon you wouldn’t have to wait at all.

Double Date Night at Hanoi Hannah

Hanoi Hannah does Vietnamese food at its very best – and it’s cheap! Like, perfectly-on-budget cheap. The four of us got out of there for under $60 altogether. Granted, most of us had just done a gruelling yoga session so no one had alcohol, but the great thing about eating out for lunch is that I rarely drink before evening as it just sends me to sleep.

Double dating is a great way to catch up with friends you haven’t seen in a long time, get to know your friends’ partners and spend couple time together, even if you are with other people. It also has a unique set of benefits for your own relationship – you get to see your partner through someone else’s (two other people’s!) eyes, you get to tell your stories new again and riff off each other just like the good old days and it breaks up your usual date night routine.

You’re also more likely to dress up if you’re “dating” another couple, which is a handy bonus.

So, back to Hanoi Hannah. We were all ravenous by the time we sat down so we got to ordering right away. Three kinds of rice paper rolls, including the peking duck and the chargrilled chicken – all DEE-lish-us, healthy and reasonably priced.

I very cleverly ordered the lemongrass beef banh mi which was DELICIOUS and just what I felt like. Don’t you love it when you hit a home run with your order? Around the table there was vermicelli salad, delicious pork and yummy soup – another benefit of the double date, you get to dip your chopsticks into lots of different dishes! (No, I don’t mean that as a euphemism.)

After we were stuffed full of healthy, warming food the bill came to exactly $60 for all four of us. That’s a $30 Date Night, right there!

The atmosphere is fantastic for a date. There’s lots of colour around, it’s shabby chic with an Oriental twist… sarongs hanging from the ceiling, quirky art and exposed brick walls… it’s a cosy venue that’s not trying too hard and it works very, very well.

You might feel the pressure to give up your table quickly after your date, given the queues, but Chapel Street Windsor is RIGHT THERE so a stroll to do some window shopping will stretch it out a bit further, plus there are so many great coffee shops so maybe you can drop in for a latte at coffee roasters Dukes to pad your date out a bit further.

I am yet to try this place- I must go! It sounds delicious. I haven’t had a what-you-order-hitting-the-spot moment for a while!
