We get a lot of great feedback about our date ideas site. But one comment that keeps coming up in particular from some of our dear internet-savvy readers who are self-professed nerds and geeks, is that while they love the ideas, they find it hard-pressed to FIND a girl to date in the first place!
This breaks my heart… and so I just wanted to say that I am Team Geek (in fact, I am slowly becoming quasi-geek myself, what with this internet business and the Twitter and the aiii-ohh) – and ladies, if you’re smart, you’ll heed my advice… here are the top eight reasons you should consider dating one!
1. Geeks will treat you right.
Geeks, more than anyone, know what it’s like to be teased – after a lifetime of high school wedgies and toilet dunkings, they wouldn’t wish the same on anyone. All their experience shapes them into sweet., caring individuals who definitely have their heart in the right place. Geeks will look after you like no jock ever could.
2. Geeks are great conversationalists.
Let’s face it – they’re highly intelligent! This makes them great conversationalists on just about any topic you can think of. Even if they don’t know much about it, their huge brains probably know more about it than most people. Or they could just Google it and get a grasp on any topic from rocket science to topics such as South Africa and The Iraq and everywhere and such as. You’ll never run out of conversations!
3. Geeks will do the thinking for you!
No doubt it will come to good use one day. Trivia nights, fixing your computer, working out the cost-per-wear of your new Jimmy Choos before you can even bat an eyelid… this leaves your brain free to focus on the important things. Like World Peace.
4. Everyone loves a DIY rescue.
So, the exterior may need a little renovating on a Geek. That’s fine! That’s do-able! We’ve already established that they are lovely, intelligent human beings. That takes care of the hard part. The easy (and the fun!) part is the makeover – a well-chosen haircut, some new clothes, a little Vitamin D and voila!
5. You’ll get your weekends with them
Football? Baseball? Basketball? Forget it. Geeks are not interested in sports! Which means you don’t have to put up with gangs of rowdy boys in your house watching the game, or having one-way conversations with your sweetie while he focuses on the score. Picture instead visits to the art gallery, walks in the park and dinners out on the weekends.
6. You’ll be number one
Right after the internet, that is. But the good news is, a Geek has already spent years and years of one-on-one time with the Internet. He’s probably ready for a change – and just the fact that you’re 3-D is totally going in your favour!
7. You’ll love his friends
You won’t find your Geek out with the boys at strip clubs, drinking too much or flirting with others. Instead, his friends will be as sweet, sincere and fun as he is. Think quiet weekends spent playing Everquest, giving you time to shop with your friends and not having to worry about what he’s up to!
8. He won’t leech off you
You won’t find a Geek on welfare… they’re far too clever for that. In general, you will find they have high-level, well-paying jobs. And after they’ve spent their hard-earned cash on all the great new gadgets they can get their hands on, you’ll be next in line for spoiling!
So, assuming I’ve convinced you to take a chance on a bit of Geek Love – here is the perfect place to find your perfect geek. Happy dating!
Taking a digger out on a first date? Here are some First Date Ideas that will keep things interesting!
Writer, dating columnist, wife, coffee addict, foodie, fashionista... Melburnian through and through. Muser, dancer, blogger, tweeter. Likes to get her head on telly now and again. Sleeper, dreamer, a sucker for romance. And of course... a cheap date.
This article is horribly trite and also furthers a stereotype of geeks that just isn’t true. A great majority of these points are offensive to anyone who identifies with “geek culture”.
Number 4 is particularly off-putting. A lot of geeks are pretty good looking and there’s certainly no direct correlation between being a geek and being ugly.
I went to a twitter social event 6 months ago – most were overweight and unshaven and unable to hold a conversation. Not appealing for a girl. I kept my distance from the guy that was wearing a “windows 7” t-shirt! Seems like most other people did too.
If you were to pie chart a comparison of geeks who are good looking to geeks who are not, well… I think you would see a distinct variation.
Um… can I please just point out that I never once implied geeks were ugly! I never even used the word ugly!
I said new clothes. I said haircut.
I would never launch such a personal attack on anyone, let alone an entire culture of people!
And Dave, shame on you.
Emma, you do seem pro geek in this post but I do agree with Mandy about the stereotype being portrayed here.
You have failed to realise that most geek guys actually prefer girls who don’t want to change them. They don’t like stupid, selfish, superficial girls that want to do makeovers. I do realise that is your audience.
If you are trying to be funny then it doesn’t come across all that well. I think Beauty and the Geek has distorted your view on reality.
This is fun Emma. I get your point, especially considering I have one of those leech types hovering around the extended family who says he’s emotionally ava but is wanting a great girl to pick up the tab for his availability! He has no geek skills, is not geek, geek is good.
Bah! We geeks have totally moved on:
Virtual Girlfriends are where its at!
From their site:
“Kari does everything a real girl does. From philosophical conversations to heart felt chit chats.”
‘heart felt chit chats’ – yep, that covers everything I had in mind….
What a beautiful sentiment! You could probably replace “geek” with any of the non-dating population (balding, overweight, mediocre of the world). But I do love it.
Being an IT student and a (female!) geek meeself, I know from experience this list is all wrong. Quite the lot of geeks ARE into -watching- sports (Formula one racing and soccer are very popular amongst my fellow geeky students) and though you won’t spot them in stripclubs, I do know the guys hand around quite the number of hard disks and flash drives loaded with porn.
Perhaps they’ve come to see me as one of the boys and are different around non-geek girls, but really, there’s as much difference in geeks as there is in other men!
Oh please, I dont see what the geeks here are getting so defensive about?
Geeks are stereotyped on the tv series Big Bang Theory – and this show takes it to the enth degree. Yet its stereotyping is accepted cause its funny?
I think the characters on the Big Bang Theory portray a classic represenation of geeks…
The characters always have issues picking up girls. Poor Raj can’t even talk around girls!
hahaha I loved this article! I am a total geek (proud of it!) and so is my husband.
I think everyone is a geek in some way.
Very cute article- and mega bonus points for the Miss Teen South Carolina reference! (…and South Africa and the Iraq and everywhere and such as…)!
