What the Eyes Don’t See
HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR CITY?
I thought I knew Melbourne like the back of my hand, living in the CBD for more than 5 years I knew every nook and alley way that the city had to offer. What I didn’t know was the stories behind the streets I knew so well.
For Date Night I took Emma out on a different adventure. A self-guided tour of our city using an audio narration that I downloaded onto our phones. It was easy to organise and cheap too, less than half our $30 budget.
At first glance, this date idea made it to the top of the lame list, there’s nothing romantic about it.
IN THE BEGINNING
It starts with both of you standing at a city landmark, your date’s attention is stolen by her iphone and the white earbuds attached to it. You begin staring at each other, not a word said as you listen to the voice narration in your phone… and then a wow moment passes by with stories of Melbourne, some you’ve heard and some that you haven’t.
GOOD DATE NEEDS CONVERSATION
You may think that this date idea gives little room for conversation, but it’s quite the contrary. Each story lasts only a few minutes (with the exception of a few). The topics covered during the narration gives plenty to discuss which you walk from one point of interest to the next.
WHAT MAKES THIS DATE SO GOOD!
There is little planning needed for this date idea. A little sunshine and a pair of walking shoes is all it takes to make a this date idea brilliant! Grab a coffee and maybe some donuts and it gets even better, include a cheap bite to eat half way through and you’ve got a date idea that will have you occupied for half the day. It’s an urban hike!
DO I RECOMMEND IT
Sure do! I learned about landmarks in which I walk by every day but never took much notice of. I listened to stories about famous murders, and of people who helped form our city as well as the gold rush and monumental moments in time.
WHERE DO I DOWNLOAD OUR CITY GUIDE?
I downloaded a walking tour for Melbourne (Australia) here: Melbourne Self-Guided Walking Tour – they also have tours for Sydney.
A google search for Self-Guided Walking tours and I can see places like Chicago, London, Washington, New York, Boston, Philly… I’m sure you’ll be able to easily find something in your city.
